Cold weather is upon us, and soon many households will be feeling the heat. Perhaps not so much IN their homes, but those energy bills will be heating up! According to a report* from the US. Department of Energy (DOE), approximately 40% of U.S. homes have single-pane windows, which are inherently inefficient, and poor insulators. This can result in big heat losses out the windows. But it’s possible to reduce these losses, at a relatively low cost, by installing low-emissivity (low-e) storm windows.
Additional Insulation at a Significantly Lower Cost
Here are a few stunning facts from the DOE report:
- Windows are a major source of heating losses and gains in residential buildings. Despite this fact, approximately 40% of U.S. homes have single-pane windows, which are inherently inefficient, and poor insulators
- Over the last decade, the installation of low-emissivity (low-e) double-pane windows has largely been limited to new housing and major remodeling projects.
- Storm windows can provide added insulation at a reasonable price.
- It is estimated that over 800,000 storm windows are sold annually in the United States. However most are clear glass and do not include a low-e coating for additional insulating performance.
- The installation of low-e storm windows is estimated to reduce heating and cooling consumption by 12 to 33% in residential homes.
